Even in the Darkest Places — Finding Light Through Grief | Painting Through Grief Blog by Art Chris G

(From my “Painting Through Grief” series – featuring the Owl)

When the clocks changed this weekend, it hit me harder than I expected.

Driving home from the show in the dark — first time this year — and suddenly it felt like the light had been switched off inside me, too.

It’s strange how something as small as the early night can stir up so much.

The house felt emptier, the silence louder.

And that’s when I noticed the owl sketch waiting on my desk. The words for this week’s affirmation card already written beside it:

“Even in the darkest places — light finds its way.”

At first, I thought it was just about hope — the kind that comes later, when the storm passes.

But as I sat there, brush in hand, I realised it’s also about now.

About the tiny, stubborn flicker that stays, even when everything feels too quiet, too much, too dark.

Owls have always fascinated me.

They see in the dark. They sit quietly and watch — not rushing, not fighting, just being present in the shadows.

And that’s what painting became for me that night: a way to sit with the darkness instead of pushing it away.

Each brushstroke felt like breathing again.

The more I painted, the lighter it felt — not because anything had changed, but because I had made space for it.

Grief doesn’t go away. It shifts, reshapes, softens in some places and sharpens in others.

Some nights, it feels heavier than ever — but even then, light still finds its way through.

Sometimes it’s a painting, sometimes it’s a kind word, sometimes it’s a memory that makes you smile instead of cry.

“A Reminder: Your Heart Still Knows the Light”

If you’re standing in your own dark place right now, don’t rush to find the light.

It’s already there — small, quiet, patient — waiting for you to notice it.

You’re not lost. You’re just finding your way.
